A common fallacy is that the Native American population was peaceful and pristine up until the Europeans showed up and destroyed their civilizations.
It is possible that sometimes this may have been a good thing.
The Aztecs before the Europeans, were sacrificing enough innocent people that they build monumental towers made from their skulls.
To those innocents, destined to be slaughtered, the Spanish would have been seen as rescuers.
“The tower is believed to be one of seven similar structure that once stood in the Aztec capital city of Tenochtitlán (now Mexico City). The skull towers are mentioned in contemporary accounts of the city’s capture by Hernan Cortes in 1521, and were razed by the Spanish conquistadores shortly thereafter.”
