I've already lived though a couple of recessions in UK where folk were forced onto bikes/public transport - I didn't even have a car myself then and rode a bicycle everywhere, but I could tell that those who were doing it out of necessity rather than choice were thoroughly miserable, angry and often rode badly and aggressively..
