I prefer "self-custody" instead of "non-custodial" as a term as it clearer, but people seem to prefer non-custodial for some reason. The trick I use is that a *custodial* wallet has a *custodian*, which is somebody who holds onto your Bitcoin for you. Which means it's not your Bitcoin. A non-custodial wallet doesn't have a custodian. Easy peasy.
