I was half-joking. I take your point. OTOH, the nuclear club has been quite exclusive. Perhaps a more balanced threat environment diminishes the prospects for proxy wars. OTOOH, we still see India/Pakistan/China skirmishes - not even proxy.
Does the larger threat keep escalation in check? Is an armed society a polite society? I'm not sure.
Nuclear-capable Iran seems inevitable to me, and arrogant foreign policy seems counterproductive.
