I have to say that Media illiteracy really helped drive Ozzy's career.
Consider all those "evil" songs, like Black Sabbath. Here is a horror movie in sonic form all about dying, and facing judgement before Satan.
Look, I dunno, but seems like a pretty Christian rock song by any definition... but because the fundamentalists couldn't deal with even a mention of the devil, he is Satan's spawn.
THEN... all the rebellious kids were drawn to it as anti-authoritarianism.
