if the mini SHD is in the system then its DAC is being used. There's no way to bypass the DAC. Not that I believe everything that I see on Audio Science Review (for instance, they seem to hate Volti audio), but the mini SHD DAC does have high ratings. I believe the DAC on one of their other offerings can be bypassed for your own. But if I were going to replace the mini SHD, it would not be with another mini DSP product. The mini SHD is a crummy product, to me, but not because of the DAC
