Public schools are just as ridiculous as they were when I was growing up. When I was entering sixth grade, my mother requested advanced math. Denied, because I wasn't "gifted." But they told her I could double up on math freshman year of high school to catch up with the gifted kids. Three years later I requested to double up on math my freshman year of high school. Surprise surprise, policy changed and they wouldn't let me.
