Germany isn’t France. There are similarities but the the calculus is somewhat different, not least because of constitutional safeguards. And Scholz holding out until September might just allow the far right and the far left to “close the circle” and feed off current resentment. This way, there is a good chance that the country buys itself another four years of democratic government as the UK has just done. What happens after that is anyone’s guess.
