it's because hosters need to recoup costs, and that's a more effective way to get your money

this isn't even me hating on hosters, those things are expensive to keep up, and the prices can be so low only because of the scale.

i've been trying to roughly match ovh/hetzner's pricing for my "vm-for-friends" service, and i'm *always* at a significant loss. for more recent VMs i just gave up and host them for free
