Fundamentally, it just strikes me that two things are both true, and lots of people involved in this process only acknowledge the first of them:
(1) open source practices are, in general, truly industry best practices
(2) documentation of open source activities, in a standards-acceptable manner, are terrible, and will be a vast amount of (almost entirely uncompensated!) work to bring up to an acceptable level
