Better materials don't necessarily cost more per unit. Costs are determined by a variety of factors so one example is steel. We produce much better steel today than 200 years ago but we produce so much more of it using less labor (which was higher as an input cost) that its cheaper per unit now.
Skills an interesting thing. Yes usually higher skills do get a higher price. But returning to the steel example the skills needed now are different than before. You wouldn't be paid more today for the 200 year old skills (except maybe as an artist)

No one would pay for higher cost lower quality steel so consumers benefit from the deflation
