Both Reddit and Twitter, faced with monetising their users, chose to move the cost to the consumer on the api. This seems like an obvious solution, but the side effect is the single developer of a successful app is left with a million dollar a month bill.

Users want to use third party clients, so let them pay to do so.

This is much closer to the Nostr model where I pay for a better experience though a private relay. I don’t have to, but it benefits me.

I’m not sure why the internet behemoths don’t adopt a similar model, assuming the same motivations as charging an app developer for access.
