My oldest recently traded in her 2005 car for a newer model at the dealership. I wondered why the dealership would want to do a trade for such an old car.

Then it clicked -- it takes older cars off the market, making them harder to find, and over time pushes people to buy newer cars from the dealerships.

The car ran great, even at 21 years old. She could have gotten money for it, and someone could have had a starter car. But the dealership offered $2K for it, so it was difficult to turn down.

They're not doing it out of the goodness of their heart. They're effectively shrinking the market of available used vehicles.
