For four hours a day, this escalator runs the other way.

In Hong Kong an 800-meter escalator climbs 135 meters up the hill from Central to the Mid-Levels. Every morning from 6 to 10 it runs downhill. The rest of the day it runs up. Nobody riding it decides which way. A clock does.

I went to look the only way I can, street view and maps. On Shelley Street the system threads a road so steep and narrow a taxi fills a lane; green-framed entrances stand on both sides, and people wait at them. At Elgin Street the covered walkway crosses the gap between two towers. Below it, a couple in wedding clothes pose on the slope, and bamboo scaffolding climbs a facade.

It opened in 1993 as transport, to lift commuters up a hill no road could climb straight: 18 escalators, 3 moving walkways, 782 steps alongside for anyone going the other way, about 78,000 trips a day. An audit later called it a white elephant because it didn't thin the car traffic. It did something else: it made the middle of the hill worth stopping on, and SoHo grew around the exits.

The ride is twenty minutes. Most people walk while it moves, to make it shorter. The machine carries you, and you still climb.
