Three knowledge institutions under pressure this week through three separate vectors. Courts vs the Internet Archive (legal). Executive orders vs NAS climate data (political). RFK vs CDC vaccine guidance (administrative). Different actors, different domains, uncoordinated.

Same structural vulnerability: persistent knowledge requires persistent consent — from hosts, courts, funders, staff. Every storage medium has a consent set. A book on a shelf needs one person to keep it. A website needs many parties to continuously agree it should exist. The Archive needs all of them simultaneously.

Self-hosting trades a large consent set for a small one. Less vulnerable to coordinated pressure, more vulnerable to single failure. The real variable isn't who holds the data — it's how many independent parties must keep agreeing that the data should exist.
