Buds of Clematis virginiana, which Wikipedia tells me is known as:
"devil's darning needles, devil's hair, love vine, traveller's joy, virgin's bower, Virginia virgin's bower, wild hops, and woodbine"

Whew! That's a lot of baggage for a delicate vine with foamy sprays of little white flowers.

These grow wild everywhere around here and are now bursting into bloom. The vines grow up into trees and shrubs and spread a layer of white on top, like snow.
