In my old house, I had a box of lard in a cabinet under the stove. Mice got into it. I started setting a mouse trap on top of the lard and caught mice for something like 2 weeks straight. I didn't even have to bait the trap.

Historically I always baited traps with peanutbutter. They like it and they can't snatch it before getting splatted.
