On 23 September, EDPS Secretary-General, Leonardo Cervera-Navas participated in the panel “AI Red Lines – From Prohibition to Enforcement”, co-organised by the Minderoo Foundation and the Center for AI and Digital Policy at the margins of the High-Level Week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
The discussion focused on how governments can enforce AI red lines through clear prohibitions, independent oversight, democratic accountability, and by ensuring that humans remain in control of AI systems.
“Establishing clear, robust and enforceable rules is not about stifling innovation. It is about ensuring that innovation does not come at the expense of fairness, transparency, safety or public trust,” said the Secretary-General.
He also highlighted that the AI Act draws a firm, non-negotiable line between technological innovation and fundamental rights:
“Today, as a supervisory authority, our mandate is clear: prohibited AI practices are a red line, and enforcing that line is a priority, as they represent unacceptable risks.”
Enforcement begins with legal certainty. But supervision cannot operate in isolation: public oversight and reporting are also key.
