My wife and I decided something similar. Though she also pointed out that the hive with less beetles are more aggressive bees in general. It's a nuc branched from a wild colony caught two years ago. The package bees with the beetle issues are very docile bees, they chase them around but aren't removing them well.
It's all trial and error with me and learning as it's my 1st year.
