Slaughter can't be considered as self defense.
Israel had options how to protect civilians. For example guarded refugee camps on insrael land with international humanitarian aid. With checkpoints to catch hamas members and weapons. If they give safe place for civilians, we can call it self defense.
This is slaughter with large asymetric advatage on israel side. It's not WW2. Israel had options how minimalise civilian causalties. But they choose do only PR stunts as “roof knocking” which is worthless when people don't have safe place to run.
