You all who are like "Look how careful I am, I remembered to give the case for zero!" are just not teaching with the same level of care as someone who is giving uniform definitions that are simple and work fine and cover every possible case.

A great example is the definition of countable set. Just talk about surjections onto X+1 lmao.

Anyway, I try to do it right in my courses, but the confusion has already set in from high school.
