I actually saw a bit of a similar case, not a insane, but still funny. It was when I used to work at a datacenter. It was a bunch of buildings which belonged to the client, and it was huge, most of it empty since the 90s. One day, the field support team had to be dispatched, and they spent two nights trying to track down a server cabinet they couldn’t find anywhere. Eventually, they traced the connection to a wire that led to an isolated section that was slated for demolition.

The place was not only locked down, but the server wasn’t near the entrance, it was deep inside a section plagued with dust, rats, cockroaches, and spiders, as well locked behind 4 locked doors which they spent another week to find the keys for (they even considered breaking the doors). Why was the server there? No one fucking knew. And the best part: they just left it there anyway. No need to change what already works lol.
> In early 1997, the University of North Carolina setup a new Novell server called “Server 54”. After it was set up there was no need to access it physically and it was quickly forgotten. During an audit 4 years later, they could not find the server... anywhere. With help from Novell and Staff IT they traced the connection to a wire that went into a wall. In April of 2001, they found that found the server had been walled in during a remodel. That means that this server had remained on for the entire 4 years completely cut off from any human intervention or ventilation.
