Please help me settle a niggling issue in my mind.

I thought that Mastodon, and perhaps the Fediverse as a whole, was centered around not just following people with viewpoints you enjoy, but also including relevant hashtags, to build a useful, tailored timeline. That's part of how I'm selling the platform to IRL friends who are curious when I mention that I'm actively on Mastodon.

I get that, for post responses, you might not include relevant hashtags. But I've been seeing quite a bit of new posts that have no hashtags at all. Thus the posts are not getting the exposure they might otherwise warrant, just to the people who follow the account.

Am I doing it wrong by carefully considering a short list of relevant hashtags for every new post I do? Or am I doing it in the spirit of the platform?
