The tragedy of the commons is not that everyone is selfish and short-sighted enough to ruin the commons. It's that it only takes one selfish rich arsehole to graze their enormous herd on the commons, cut down all the trees to sell, and dump their nuclear waste there, to ruin it for everyone.
