I grew up on a farm in the tropical rainforest in a house built mostly from wood salvaged from the dump, with twelve volt power until I was about eight to ten years old (when we got a power line installed). My mother milked goats and we ate eggs and chickens and whatever else was offered and ordered food from the community co-op.

When hurricane iselle hit the island (the first one to strike as category one) and a state of emergency was called because people didn't have generator backup and couldn't drive to the store because the albezia forest was blown down and it was a crisis because the food in their refrigerators was going bad, I was like, how many people moved in from the mainland and didn't do any research about where they were living and/or how many kids who grew up here forgot how to survive?
