The reason you connect to a ground on the block of the engine, and not the battery terminal, is so you don't fry the electronics in the car. I've blown out my alternator's voltage regulator a couple of times learning this lesson. It doesn't always happen, but can easily. Sometimes, however, block grounds just won't work, and you have to jump from the battery post.
