i view anger as a healthy emotion when it's understood why it manifests, but as you point out, the way it's expressed is often destructive.
one thing i try to do when my toddler tantrums is to help work through the emotion rather than try and change it or distract from it—it's okay to be upset, it's just not okay to be destructive.
you're right, kindness, compassion, and patience are key.
