Nous Research was founded in 2022 as a group of researchers who met on various social media website, including Discord and Twitter.[1] It was founded formally in 2023 by Karan Malhotra, Shivani Mitra, Jeffrey Quesnelle, and "Teknium".[2] Quesnelle, the CEO, is a practicing Catholic who seeks to use faith as a guide around AI ethical questions.[3][4]
Nous's software allows AI models to be trained by idle computing power, such as their own model, named Hermes. Nous raised $5.2 million in seed funding in January 2024.[8] A $50 million Series A round investment in 2025, mostly by Paradigm Operations, valued the company at $1 billion.[1]
