It bears noting that I told him a couple of times that the scope of the project was ginormous for an unexperienced team, but people often suffer from "No, but I am different and special, I can pull this, because I am the one".

Don't get me wrong, EVERYONE is special and different and that is great, but there is reality. Ambitious projects fails more often than not, especially when it is backed by motivational speech and positive thoughts. Yup, sounds about right.
