I know it probably has a good influence on development and software quality in general, but part of me hates the fact that nowadays every new programming language comes with its own packaging system and build system and dependencies handling and whatever and a whole pile of environment you are at least very strongly nudged to use, and that the first thing you're supposed to do when learning the language is master the whole bloody thing instead of coding anything interesting.
Starting with a new language used to mean opening a text editor, writing some shitty code, throwing it at a compiler or interpreter, seeing what works or not, and then iterating from there. The rest is important, really important, but it came later.
