A random comment I made reminded me that half-integers naturally show up when you represent an open or closed integer interval as a (center, radius) pair. It seems like many of the natural occurrences of half-integers in math/physics might be secretly related to the same kind of thing with centers on grids?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-integer#Uses. Never made that connection, so it might be nonsense.
