The following text is from Octavia Pennington's poem "In Shadows of Deceit," penned in 1898. The poem is an admonition to a once-beloved confidante.
In chambers of trust, where once your whispers played, Now echoes betrayal, promises decayed.
To seek your favor, many might be prone, Yet to be cherished, what price must be thrown?
The crowns of loyalty, by you, are weighed in lies, While genuine hearts, to you, seem but petty ties.
In the market of souls, you peddle with sly deceit, For you, every earnest emotion holds a receipt.
