Gavaudun castle. I should visit it one day (I visited another one today, pics coming soon)

Gavaudun in quite a strange place. It's a very tiny village around this old castle from the 13th Century. The castle is not on a cliff contrarily to what it may seem, but a big "rock" basically. Its origins date back to the Gauls, as it used to be an oppidum.

And contrarily to usual medieval castles, it's not on higher ground (beside the rock itself) but in a narrow valley (I know at least of another one a dozen km away).

However, the area, in the middle of nowhere by nowadays urban standards, was of major strategical importance in the medieval era, as it was the border area between Aquitaine (often part of England back then) and the rest of France.

Oh and by the way, the place has been populated even much longer, as several prehistorical dwellings (30,000-40,000 old) have been found there.
