Hi, I'm pretty sure I'm the person who insisted on that style for Django.

I continue to believe "past tense" is the best way to do it. Commit messages are used for many purposes, but the *most common* (at least, speaking for my own experience) is looking at history. In which case reading things in the past tense is much more natural, easier to understand.
