Another Kind of Exudate

We usually think of exudates as coming from roots to feed soil microbiology sugar and amino rich substances as payment for "services rendered" like mining and converting soil minerals into bio-available formats that can be used by the plant. That format does not just occur below ground. Flowers have nectar and nectar contains many of the same substances as root exudates: sugars, amino acids and various other chemistries manufactured for various effects. But the real prize is the sugar and amino acid and both are present in both root exudates and floral nectar.

Plants have two completely different service markets to leverage, the below ground market and the above ground market. Each market provides a completely different set of services i.e. pollinators operate in the air, mineral mining services operate in the soil.
