But I bet the rest of the maintenance -- I hadn't even thought about spokes til you mentioned them -- was a lot more difficult than on modern cycles! As I recall, he does mention breakdowns and stops for maintenance, but I don't remember him going into detail about what he did for parts and tools along the way.
