If the minimum node size raises the barrier of entry to that of, say, someone with a budget of about $50k annually to spend on federation, I don't necessarily feel that this condemns the model. In fact there are advantages to this approach, in particular it makes moderation easier.
If the price floor to run a node is more like $1M then I'm not so comfortable with that.
