Spring time, before the buds and blooms burst, is a great time to prune trees. Mi amor @aaronsternberg & I helped prune the fruit trees my grandparents planted by following these techniques:

Prune less than 30% of the canopy tree at a time. Gather pruning shears and saws. Clean and sanitize tools with soapy water and alcohol before pruning, when moving from one tree to another, and again when finished with pruning.

Paint Elmer’s glue diluted with water over large wounds on the tree to help seal and heal them.

We follow this 4D approach to pruning:
1.Dead : cut away all dead branches.
2.Diseased: cut away about 1/3 and then treat the dis-ease.
3.Disfigured: fix problem areas such as crossing branches.
4.Dysfunctional: suckers, or those that don’t produce flowers or fruit.

Dysfunctional branches may also include:
-suckers on grafted trees and anything from below the graft line
-water sprouts: will not be productive, are green and vigorous, they are growing vertically. Water sprouts may be pruned at any time. Cut them at the differentiation point.
-branches that are inadequately spaced
-branches that create a narrow and weak crotch (like a skinny ‘Y’ shape)

Brush on pruning terms such as: trunk, leader branches, terminal buds, auxiliary buds, flower buds, and latent buds, nodes, drop crotch, wound wood, codominance, and how to make proper cuts.

When or pruning, start with the trunk, then the leader branches. Visualize what the tree will become. Talk to the tree. Listen to the tree. Give it a tasteful and loving haircut.

Focus on Technique. Start thinning from the bottom, then pause, step back and look up. Create room for air and light. For hedges, maintain a natural shape and keep the bottom wider than the top.

Be patient and do not use improper techniques such as topping, hat racking, leaving stumps, and taking too much.

Compost your trimmings or save and cure the wood for cooking or firewood.

Properly dispose of any diseased branches by isolating and burning them in a closed environment, do not compost diseased material. Happy trees!
