According to a statement from the Ministry of Defense of Japan, Shinjiro Koizumi, Japan’s defense minister, held a video call today with Pete Hegseth, the United States secretary of defense.

The two discussed the ongoing situation in the Middle East and reaffirmed U.S.–Japan defense and security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.

The talks come as the U.S. moves to reposition key air defense assets and an amphibious ready group from the Indo-Pacific theater to the area of responsibility of United States Central Command.
