So many folks do not take time to do this because they figure that paint will be covering the primer anyway. This is a mistake! The brush marks show right through so you want to have everything as aligned with the wood grain as possible. It only took one quart to do both pieces. Just as I suspected, the fretwork did get a lot of drips... so it was a good decision to go with the oil based primer.

After my primer set, I went over both pieces again with super fine sandpaper and wiped clean.
