That was the birth of Web 2.0. All of a sudden, people who wanted to make *real* things that were *good* could do so, because they could find skilled workers, hardware, and office space at such knock-down prices that they could be funded out of pocket or put on a credit card. People got to pursue the web they wanted, free from asshole bosses and VCs.
