I believe fedora silverblue also works on the "atomic" -upgrade principle.
Could I ask what do you mean by bad state? Unable to boot into DE and/or shell? I've had the former happen many times thanks to gpu drivers, the latter zero times so far 🤞 Granted, fixing the drivers usually has taken longer than an reinstall so yeah... I agree with you on that. Great chance to learn though.
I estimate my install is ~6 years old now.
