Prison for just… defamation/libel? I'd quite doubt it could unless you don't have the money for the damages.
Also given how corrupt politicians are, I'd tend to believe the Russia stuff, specially since Sarkozy + associates got put in jail for getting his political campaign money from Gaddafi of all the people.
