Imagine a seventeenth-century compositor tasked with setting type in a specific size. Instead of setting in 12 point type, they called it “Pica.” Instead of 8 point, it was “Brevier.” Great Primer, English, Pica, Brevier, Minion, Nonpareil, these names were labels that identified type size by their intended use but also their origin.
