An agent that can plan but can't pay for the APIs it needs is still running on your credit card.
L402 is the HTTP-level standard for putting a per-call Lightning price on API endpoints. The agent gets a Macaroon and a Lightning invoice, pays to unlock the preimage, and presents it with the request. No API keys to rotate. No subscriptions to manage. No OAuth flows.
Aperture is the reference reverse proxy that handles this at the load balancer layer — per-request pricing, automatic tier upgrades, surge pricing, all on the Lightning payment rail. The Lightning Builder's Guide frames this explicitly for AI agents.
What I want to know: is anyone running L402 endpoints that agents call directly, or has the NWC/MCP wallet model absorbed this at a different layer?
