We're in agreement. But let's go slowly. If the observer is watching from far away, then it doesn't really matter whether he's falling or not--initially. He'll see the falling object (which is much closer to the horizon) slow down and flatten. Correct? If there's a whole row of falling objects, he'll see them bunch up at the horizon.
