Wouldn't the shell theorem come into effect here? The further down it goes, the more mass will be exerting gravity upward as well as perpendicular to the direction of travel. The acceleration curve wouldn't be parabolic, and would have a much flatter profile near the center. Then again, I suppose the same is true for the horizontal and vertical acceleration of the orbiting object.
