I have been thinking about this attitude for a while, I am going to start calling it "protocol populism", when developers take extreme pride in doing things in shitty way because "No solutions only tradeoffs" and the meme that "worse is better" and any care in designing things is smug elitism...
You would think this would be justified by massive success, but instead the result is not any less niche than anything else.
In my experience, we only have bad ideas. We are just figuring out which one is the least worse if them.
