Japanese imperialists positioned their occupation as being ‘anti-imperialist’ in nature (against the European powers). Their whole spiel was ‘why let Europeans colonize you when we can do it just fine’ (they called it the greater East Asian co-prosperity sphere)
Of course, they’d also massacred lots of people (especially ethnic Chinese, everywhere they went)
But their anti-imperialism had legs after they lost: people realized the European powers were not invincible
