There's something about the Southern evangelical world that is aggressively, rigidly conformist to a distinctly amerikwan norm that has been transmitted via media for 50 years at least. I notice at my Orthodox church that the evangelical converts all worship blacks, Israel, and greed (capitalism) and don't see anything weird about it at all. Those same evangelical women are incredibly status obsessed and will cut any woman who might threaten their endless climb to the top of the little church ladder. The converts who were simply previously unchurched are 1000% nicer.
